How to Read Your Pay Stub and Find Missing Money

Your pay stub explains why the number you earned is not the number that reached your bank account. Reading it can catch mistakes, show where benefits are going, and help you plan with the money you actually receive.

Do not assume payroll is always right. A few minutes of review can protect hours of your work.

Start with gross and net pay

Gross pay is what you earned before deductions. Net pay is what remains after taxes, benefits, and other deductions. Your budget should use net pay, but gross pay helps you verify hours and rates.

Check hours and pay rates

Confirm regular hours, overtime, shift differentials, commissions, tips, and paid leave. If you worked overtime, verify the rate and number of hours. Save schedules or time records until the check is correct.

Understand the tax lines

  • Federal income tax withholding
  • Social Security tax
  • Medicare tax
  • State and local taxes where applicable

Review every deduction

Health insurance, retirement contributions, union dues, wage garnishments, transit benefits, and flexible spending accounts may appear here. Make sure each deduction is expected and the amount matches what you selected.

Compare current and year-to-date totals

Current shows this pay period. Year-to-date shows totals since the start of the year. Use YTD numbers to monitor earnings, taxes, and retirement contributions—and to notice if something changed unexpectedly.

Speak up quickly

If something looks wrong, contact payroll or human resources in writing. State the pay period, the line you question, what you expected, and attach your records. Your paycheck is not a mystery statement. It is a record of your labor, and you deserve to understand it.
