Your Monthly Money Check-In: 30 Minutes, No Shame

A monthly money check-in is a short meeting with yourself. It is not punishment for what you spent. It is a chance to see what happened, adjust what is coming, and make one clear decision before the next month starts.

Set a timer for 30 minutes. Bring your bank accounts, bills, debt balances, and a notebook. Then move through the check-in without turning it into a trial.

Minutes 1–5: Check the ground

  • Record checking and savings balances
  • Look for pending charges and overdraft risk
  • Confirm the next payday
  • List bills due in the next seven days

Minutes 6–15: Review what changed

Scan transactions by category. Do not obsess over every coffee. Look for patterns: higher groceries, extra rideshares, a subscription renewal, fees, or several small purchases that added up. Ask what was unusual and what may repeat.

Minutes 16–22: Update goals and debt

Write current savings and debt balances next to last month’s numbers. Progress may be a lower card balance, $40 more saved, or simply no new late fee. Count stability as progress.

Minutes 23–27: Look ahead

Add known events such as birthdays, school costs, travel, car maintenance, holidays, and annual bills. Divide larger costs by the paychecks remaining before they arrive.

Minutes 28–30: Choose one move

Pick one action with a date: cancel a subscription, move $25 to savings, call a creditor, adjust a bill due date, or set the grocery limit. One completed move is more powerful than a page of vague intentions.

Close the meeting with respect

Your numbers may show decisions you would change. Good. That means the check-in worked. Take the information, make the next move, and leave the shame out of the room.
